About the 2004 Forum:
The Forest Products Techno-Business Forum is the first event of
its kind, with the specific goal of illustrating the potential of
IPST and CPBIS in contributing to the industry via enhanced
techno-business innovation, transfer, and deployment. The combined
technical expertise at IPST and the industry-specific business
knowledge created at CPBIS provide the industry a unique resource
in innovation.
The Forum kicked-off with a Keynote Address by Dr. Kathryn Shaw
who spoke on "Innovation: The Role of Human Resources Revolution as
a Productivity Driver." The first panel session was on
Technology/Business-Based Opportunities for the Forest Products
Industry . Panelists commented on industry trends and drivers
- from both the analyst's and industry's perspective - and the
government's perspective, including Agenda 2020. Economic realities
and business/scientific/technological challenges and needs were
presented.
The second panel session was on Nanotechnology as an
evolving new business opportunity in new materials. Panelists
presented the technical realities and opportunities as well as
factors needed to fully evaluate the business potential of this new
technology. The Biorefinery panel session presented the
societal and economic challenges and opportunities in
commercialization of biorefineries, and then key risks and drivers
were discussed from panelists offering different perspectives.
The final panel presented different perspectives on
Improving Industrial Performance through Academic Research
. Presentations and discussion focused on how to break down
barriers between academic, government and industry and to identify
better ways to express industry needs, enhance communication,
facilitate techno-business innovation, transfer, and
deployment.
