Dr. James L. Ferris, President of IPST, to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at 84th Annual PIMA meeting in June 2003

ATLANTA--May 22, 2003- In recognition for his years of dedicated service to the international pulp and paper industry, Dr. James L. Ferris will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening ceremonies of this year's PIMA's 84th Annual International Management Conference in New York City on June 30, 2003.

The Center for Paper Business and Industry Studies (CPBIS), the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA), and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) will jointly recognize Dr. Ferris, and the award will be presented by A. D. "Pete" Correll, Chairman and CEO of Georgia-Pacific Corporation.

Jim McNutt, executive director of CPBIS, said, "Dr. Ferris' long and distinguished career in industry-generated research and development and graduate education makes him a deserving recipient of this award. His leadership has helped to expand the horizons of many people in the international pulp and paper industry."

Dr. Ferris earned his B.S. degree in chemical engineering in 1966 from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his M.S. (1969) and Ph.D. (1974) degrees from The Institute of Paper Chemistry, Appleton, Wisconsin. The Institute of Paper Chemistry moved from Appleton to Atlanta in 1989 and became the Institute of Paper Science and Technology at that time. Dr. Ferris is the first alumni of the school to become its president.

Dr. Ferris began working as a project engineer at the Weyerhaeuser Company in the Everett kraft mill before completing his undergraduate degree. He left Weyerhaeuser in 1967 to return to school for his graduate work.

After completing his doctorate, he returned to Weyerhaeuser where he held various technical managerial titles during his 21-year career with this company, He began as a division bleaching scientist and subsequently held the positions of Technical Service Manager, Research and Development Manager, Director of Fiber Products Research and Development, Manufacturing Manager/Quality Director of the Pulp Division, and Vice-President of Research and Development. He then accepted his current position in 1996 as the president of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology.

Dr. Ferris is a director of Albany International Corporation, a trustee of the Georgia Tech Research Corporation, and a director of the Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. He is a past director of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI).

Dr. Ferris is retiring effective June 30, 2003, from his role as the president of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST). When he retires, he will remain active as a trustee of the IPST Corporation.
